Pakistan Smartphone App Success (Groopic)

Lahore, Pakistan (CNN) -- The Pakistani city of Lahore is known as the heritage capital of the country. It's scattered with ancient mosques, majestic 16th century mansions and antique minarets. Lahorites are proud of their cultural legacy.

It's old, it's timeless but it's changing. In the midst of this old city, a vibrant technological revolution is taking place that is buzzing its presence onto the Internet and beyond. Groups of dynamic young tech entrepreneurs are converging on the city to invent mobile apps that can change the way Pakistan can do business with the rest of the world.

Pakistan has 30 million Internet users, that's almost four times the population of New York City. About 15 million Pakistanis are accessing the Internet via their mobile phones opening up a whole new stream of consumer possibilities for savvy business people.

Young entrepreneurs like Ali Rehan, 26, are now exploiting this potential. Rehan and his team at Eyedeus Labs has created"Groopic," a new smartphone app that lets you take a group picture -- and put yourself in it. This way, the photographer will also be included in the picture. It's easy to use and it's making waves in the tech world.

You can now check which devices are logged into your Google account

Google has launched a new security feature for its users Monday: A Devices and Activity dashboard, letting you know which devices are accessing your Google account.
The dashboard, available here, shows you a list of all devices active on your account in the last 28 days, as well as the location they're in.

A new Google dashboard lets you check which devices are currently signed into your Google account.
If you see any suspicious activity, a link on top lets you quickly set up your security settings, including changing your password as well as recovery and 2-step verification settings.
That wizard, aimed primarily at administrators but accessible to all Google users, can be accessed directly at g.co/accountcheckup.

Dropbox’s Mobile Apps Are Now Integrated With Microsoft Office

Earlier this month, Dropbox and Microsoft announced a partnership that would see Dropbox offer better support for Microsoft’s Office Suite, including the ability to edit Office docs from the Dropbox mobile app among other things. Today, those integrations have gone live for users of both the Android phone and iOS Dropbox applications.
Explains Dropbox in a blog post announcing the news, users can now edit their Office files when they’re “on the go,” editing them directly from the Dropbox app and accessing the files directly from the Office apps. To use the new feature, you’ll first need update your app to the latest version, then open any Office document, spreadsheet or presentation that’s stored in your Dropbox.
From here, a new “Edit” icon (see above picture) will be available that will allow you to switch over to the new mobile Office apps to make changes to the file. When you’re finished working, those changes will be saved back to Dropbox automatically.

Google is closing all its Basecamp stores of Google Glass

Google is closing all its Basecamp stores, the physical retail shops where it sold Google Glass, according to 9to5Google.
According to this post on Google+ from a Google Glass developer, the company no longer needs the stores because so many people are buying the smart glasses online.
But the move also comes after several rounds of not-great news for Google Glass. Some major developers — like Twitter — have stopped supporting their apps on Google Glass.
Reuters reported recently that several companies that adopted Google Glass early on have lost interest in the device.
There were only four places in the world where people could buy Google Glass in a Basecamp store: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, and London. We took a trip to the London one.

Google search on smartphones and tablets now shows product details with 360-degree view

A month in advance of Christmas, Google has updated its search engine on smartphones and tablets to show new product details. he company says it wants to help shoppers make purchase decisions on the go with its new expandable product cards right on Google.com.

In addition to more detailed information about products, you can now see a list of stores from which you can buy them, as well as product reviews from customers. You can now also rotate selected products 360 degrees to get a better look. Last but not least, Google is also now offering local inventory ads on tablets, letting advertisers promote their local products across more devices:

These new mobile features fall under the Google Shopping umbrella, a Google service meant to help consumers find products on online shopping websites and compare prices between different vendors. You may have heard of it under one of its former names: Google Product Search, Google Products, and Froogle (a pun on the term “frugal”).

Yet Google is offering these new additions directly in its main Google search page (notice the “Web” tab is selected):

As you can see above with the Nexus 10 example query, search results show the image of the product along with merchants who carry it. Product information will adjust based on the item (in this case, we’re told the brand, operating system, cellular connectivity, screen size, weight, and screen resolution).

The existing Viber users will be soon getting the new Public Chats feature and can choose the option from the main menu. To browse live conversations, Viber app users will have to select the 'compass' icon to search list of Public Chats to follow.

Viber has also launched a separate Public Chats microsite to promote the new feature, where it's described as, "Public Chats is a new way to get behind the scenes with music, film, fashion, sports or whatever else you're into."

CEO Talmon Marco revealed to Techcrunch the new Public Chats feature has been optimised first for Android devices though it will work on other platforms well, as long as they are running version 5.0 or above.

The Public Chats will include live conversations from people (whom users follow) and even celebrities. The company in a YouTube video reveals that the most popular chats will be featured on the Public Chats home screen of the Viber app. Techcrunch also notes that while users can follow any Public Chat, they "will only be able to jump in and talk in Public Chats if the account in question is in their contacts."
