Portuguese buses and taxis are also wi-fi routers!

Routers on 600 buses and taxis allow free Internet access and collect data for city planners.

A massive mobile Wi-Fi network that could be a model for many cities was launched in the city of Porto, Portugal, this fall. Buses and taxis are equipped with routers that serve as mobile Wi-Fi hot spots for tens of thousands of riders. The routers also collect data from the vehicles — and from sensors on trash bins around the city — and relay it back to city offices to help with civic planning.

More than 600 buses and taxis are part of the network, which is now serving 70,000 people a month and absorbing between 50 and 80 percent of wireless traffic from users who otherwise would have had to use the cellular network. Built by a startup called Veniam, spun out of the University of Porto, it is the largest and most sophisticated vehicle-based network in the world, the company says.

In addition to supplying Internet access, the Porto network is being used to collect sensor data. When buses and taxis hit a sharp bump that might be due to a pothole, the suspension sensors detect this and relay the information to City Hall to help identify where roads need repairs. Waste containers equipped with sensors use the network to relay whether they are full, so they can be picked up at the most efficient times.

The company recently got $4.2 million in venture funding and set up its headquarters in Mountain View, California. Founder Joao Barros, an associate professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Porto, says it plans to expand service to other cities.

Google Replaces Irritating CAPTCHA System With A Simple Check Box

Everyone knows how irritating it is when a bunch of weird numbers and alphabets pop up on a website for you to guess correctly and re-enter in the given space. You had to guess again in case you got it incorrect in the first attempt. These irritating combination of distorted numeric digits and alphabets are known as CAPTCHAs.
CAPTCHAs system were used to discriminate a human from a robot where a robot can be an artificial intelligence (AI) program used for any purpose categorized as an illegal internet activity by Google.
Well, Google announced a good news in its latest blog for all the internet users frustrated with CAPTCHAs. They are now introducing a one-click check system named as reCAPTCHA which would work better than the old system.
Google Announces New CAPATCHA system
CAPTCHAs system relied on the inability of robots to solve a distorted text but modern world AI programs can solve any variant of distorted text with 99.8% accuracy. Therefore, this system was no longer a dependable option.
ReCAPTCHA, despite sounding simple, is essentially a high degree of sophistication behind a modest checkbox. This new API will use “risk analysis” engine to decide whether you passed the test for human with just a click or need any further examination which will be a rare occurrence. WordPress and Humble Bundles have already adopted reCAPTCHA and allowed to pass a user with just one click 60-80% of the time.
Google will also create mobile-friendly reCAPTCHAs as increased number of internet users are on computing devices such as smartphone or tablet. The mobile-friendly version will trick robots with computer vision problems which will just be a simple image guessing game for humans.
Google Announces New CAPATCHA system 2
CAPTCHAs are a permanent fixture for the internet, hence, they will be sticking around for a while but will not appear frequently on websites.

Skype Translator Preview – An Exciting Journey to a New Chapter in Communication

For more than a decade, Skype has been breaking down geographical barriers to make every day audio and video communications possible. As we enter an era in which computing experiences need to be more personal, Skype has looked at ways to help communities create stronger connections and be more productive. Using innovations from Microsoft Research, Skype is now removing another barrier to make it possible for people to communicate irrespective of what language they speak.
Today, we are excited to announce the first phase of the Skype Translator preview program. The preview program will kick-off with two spoken languages, Spanish and English, and 40+ instant messaging languages will be available to Skype customers who have signed-up via the Skype Translator sign-up page and are using Windows 8.1 on the desktop or device.
Skype brings people together to make progress on what matters to them. Skype Translator will open up endless possibilities for people around the world to connect, communicate and collaborate; people will no longer be hindered by geography and language.

We asked two schools to try Skype Translator – Peterson School in Mexico City, and Stafford Elementary School in Tacoma, USA – playing a game of ‘Mystery Skype’ in which the children ask questions to determine the location of the other school. One classroom of children speaking Spanish and the other speaking English, Skype Translator removed this language barrier and enabled them to communicate – the video shows their wonderful reactions.
Skype Translator is a great example of the benefit of Microsoft’s investment in research. We’ve invested in speech recognition, automatic translation and machine learning technologies for more than a decade, and now they’re emerging as important components in this more personal computing era. Skype Translator is the most recent and visible example.
Skype Translator relies on machine learning, which means that the more the technology is used, the smarter it gets. We are starting with English and Spanish, and as more people use the Skype Translator preview with these languages, the quality will continually improve. We also need your help to expedite new language releases. So make sure you sign up, let your language preferences be known and get involved!
This is just the beginning of a journey that will transform the way we communicate with people around the world. Our long-term goal for speech translation is to translate as many languages as possible on as many platforms as possible and deliver the best Skype Translator experience on each individual platform for our more than 300 million connected users.
We are so excited to kick off the preview program and hope that you’ll sign-up today to be part of this new chapter in communication. To get started, please visit the Skype Translator sign-up page! 5 Best Phones for Selfie Enthusiasts

Whether you hate it or you love it, the selfie is a craze that isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon. Since we are going to obey the principle of “When in Rome” here are some phones which you could potentially be buying already or could be enticed into buying so that you can also be among the selfie-army. The range of phones starts from the mid-range but each phone specified here is definitely worth what you pay for it with the added bonus of the front camera boasting such specs being one of the highlights of it.

1. The Sony Xperia C3

xperia

This is a phone that should definitely be on your radar. It has a heck of a front camera, a pretty potent flash and some absolutely amazing specs to match. A snapdragon 400 Quad-Core CPU, 1 GB of RAM, 8GB ROM, 5.5” 720p display (this is by far the only short fall of the smartphone), an 8MP back camera and a 5 MP front camera. The front camera has the added benefit of a flash for getting the most out of the dimmest lit environments, the phone is expected to be hovering somewhere near the ~$200 budget and considering the only other phones in that budget only have 2 MP front facing cameras without flash, I would say that the selling point of this phone would have to be the unique front camera.
Additionally, the phone has a hardware button on the side for capturing photos and if you aren’t one for buttons be they touch or hardware, you can always just smile and have the smile detector do the job for you.

2. Nokia Lumia 735

lumia

This is the latest entry into the windows phone ring, though this phone immediately defined itself as “the selfie phone” straight from the reveal, the wide angled lens at the front and also boasting a 5MP camera at the front makes this a definite steal for the absolutely mouthwatering price of 15,000 PKR. Plus, Nokia Lumia’s are famous for their absolutely stunning camera quality, so you can be sure that your picture will turn out better than you might expect and since the phone has been tailored to be used for selfie’s I am sure that the good elves who put this phone together for the user will have given some extra consideration to that regard.
Additionally, Lumia’s own selfie app that is bundled in the phone helps make the after touch of selfies more fun with filters, effects and many other options to help give a personal touch to your pictures before you share them on social media sites. This makes the phone much more convenient straight out of the box so that you can take a celebratory selfie right as you unpack the phone from its box.

3. Oppo N1

oppo n1

Now, we have seen two phones with front facing cameras of 5MP, but Oppo has managed to up the ante with the N1, while the phone has been doing a pretty great job of flying under the radar the one unique aspect of this phone would have to be the swivel camera which boasts a behemoth 13MP camera. Those of us who remember the oh so glorious Nokia 3250 from the golden days of Symbian should be having nostalgic flashbacks about what a swivel camera was like. And since the camera is on a swivel the flash of the camera is always there to capture the ideal selfie in a variety of environments.
The only real drawback of the phone would have to be the massive price tag attached to it. Currently it sits at a whopping ~40,000 PKR or ~$400 and understandably people will seek better branded alternatives in that price range but you shouldn’t knock this phone before you look at the specs too and see that the phone is more than just bells and whistles but also packs quite a punch on the inside as well.

4. HTC Desire Eye

htc

If you were let down by the above phone and are a bit brand conscious, have a look at the HTC Desire Eye, an aptly named phone since the camera is definitely one to match. This is a phone that has been specifically designed by HTC to gauge the interests of selfie enthusiasts the way Microsoft did with the Nokia Lumia 735, though the HTC Desire Eye has a price tag that is currently still in the air but predictions are that it will be somewhere in the ~50,000 PKR or ~$500 price when it comes, so if you are a brand conscious consumer and don’t want to give in to the Oppo, give the HTC Desire Eye a shot.
The phone doesn’t need a swivel to deliver 13MP goodness on the front and back facing camera of the phone. Each side of the phone has dual LED flash and forgive me for sounding like a broken record but this certainly helps out in the situations where selfies are mostly taken at night times or other dimly lit occasions. Additionally, if you thought the camera is again the selling point of the phone, look at the specs of this monster and tell me you wouldn’t want to go for this if you had the dough for it.

5. Samsung Galaxy Note 4

note4

If you missed the keynote when the phone was revealed, you will see that the front camera of this phone is something that selfie enthusiasts with brand loyalty have been dreaming of! Now, while I know that the front camera is only a 3.7MP but the other incentives of this phone are absolutely marvelous. The enormous screen is large enough to easily fit in more than a dozen people and with robust features such as “wide selfie” which is basically panorama mode but with the front camera you can make sure that even the people who just have a quarter of their face showing in the picture aren’t left out of the action.
Taking photos with the screen or hardware button not your thing? Use the heart rate sensor to impress all the people in the crowd and truly stand out from the rest! Plus, if you are tired of the front camera always mirroring your selfies like any other phone, there is an option to make it so that your shots are saved as they are taken so that the pictures you take aren’t mirrored by turning on the “save as flipped” option.
While the Galaxy Note 4 is easily on the radar of most Samsung loyalists, I am sure most of you will be glad to learn these added benefits of the front camera to make yourselves the talk of the crowd whenever its time for taking a selfie.

Facebook Graph Search Comes To Your Smartphone!

Facebook’s search technology is coming to mobile devices this week. (Facebook)
Facebook’s search is going mobile.
The social network said Monday it’s going to make its “Graph Search” technology available over the next week for the Facebook iPhone app, nearly two years after it debuted for desktop computers.
Users will be able to search inside posts of their friends, allowing them to easily find items like photos from a wedding or a special trip.
“You’ve told us the most important thing is being able to find posts you’ve seen before, and now you can,” Tom Stocky, vice president of search at Facebook, wrote in a blog post.
Search has become one of the most crucial technologies in Silicon Valley. Not only is it central to Google’s business, for example, but it’s also become a key technology in many services such as Apple’s Siri digital assistant, LinkedIn’s professional network, and Twitter’s messaging service. For Facebook, the inclusion of Graph Search gives users a way to interact with its service even more while on their mobile devices.
Facebook announced Graph Search in January 2013, calling it a key technology for the future and a potential new business over time. The technology allowed users to tap into the vast stores of information in Facebook’s databases with queries such as “College classmates who like Coldplay and X-Men movies and live in San Francisco.”
But the promise was grander than the delivery. In practice, Graph Search was complex. The way it worked didn’t always make sense, and it turns out that pulling together all the information about a user from Facebook’s many databases proved difficult, the company said a year after the launch in an interview with BloombergBusinessweek.
That hasn’t deterred the company from moving forward, though. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has said he believes search, as well as the company’s Instagram photo messaging service and WhatsApp messaging program, will reach 1 billion people within the next five years. “Once we get to that scale, then we think that they will start to become meaningful businesses in their own right,” he said in an October conference call.

Pizza Hut will be taking orders by actually ‘reading’ your mind.

Globally known for its pizzas and side dishes, Pizza Hut now plans on reinventing the traditional menu card. Their new “Instinctual Menu” selects pizza toppings for consumers by tracking eye movements.
Fitted with eye-tracking technology from the Swedish High-Tech Company ‘Tobii’; the new tablet-based menu, automatically selects pizza toppings based on the ingredients which your eyes linger on for the longest. The application then analyzes the data to form an algorithm, which based on your choices, recommends you a pizza flavor.
The new menu has received positive reviews, with Pizza Hut reporting that it has made 98% of its customers feel satisfied. Currently, the new technology has been made available in the company’s UK-based outlets for testing purposes. As per the results, its seems that the trend will catch on, meaning sooner or later a Pizza Hut in Pakistan will be serving us Pizzas made according to our minds.

Microsoft continues tinkering with Windows 10 preview!

Microsoft says it won't deliver any more substantial updates to the Windows 10 Technical Preview until the new year, but that doesn't mean nothing's happening at the moment.
On Tuesday, Microsoft made available a few fixes and updates to the November Windows 10 Technical Preview build (9879), including one meant to fix Explorer-specific crashes. And it sounds like more fixes will be coming for Build 9879 before this year is out.
An interim partner build of Windows 10 -- one not meant for "public" preview consumption (Build 9888) also leaked this week. That build is the first of the Windows 10 ones where Microsoft has changed the kernel version number from 6.4 to 10.0.
Beyond that, what's next?
As some of us Microsoft watchers have been hearing for months, Microsoft is planning to take the wraps off the so-called "consumer preview" of Windows 10 in January 2015.
The latest word from my sources with good track records on internal Windows information is that this is still the plan. But the next update to the Technical Preview will be known as the January Technical Preview (JTP), rather than the consumer preview, sources say. It will be followed by a February Tech Preview, a March Tech Preview, etc., my sources claim.
The coming JTP is expected to include support for Continuum, a feature that will allow users with two-in-one devices with two-in-one devices to more easily transition modes when connecting and disconnecting keyboards. It also may be the first build where Microsoft turns on Cortana integration in Windows 10.
My sources say that we will see and hear information about this in January -- most likely around January 20 to 21 -- when Microsoft is expected to show off its Windows 10 progress to invited press and analysts during an event in Redmond, Wash.
It's less clear when the Windows 10 mobile SKU preview bits will be available to external testers. I'm hearing that Microsoft is still testing the mobile SKU on a very limited basis within the Operating Systems Group at this point. I would think the mobile SKU might need to be dogfooded internally at Microsoft more widely before Microsoft releases it to external testers. But once Microsoft does deliver the Windows 10 mobile bits to testers, ongoing and regular updates will be coming at least monthly, according to sources.
By the way, I also am hearing that this mobile SKU will work not just on ARM-based phones and tablets, but also on smaller and less powerful Intel-based ones, too. Microsoft officials hinted this might be the case during Tech Ed Europe, but it indeed does sound like the plan, my sources say.
January 2015 is also when Microsoft is expected to drop the second test build of Windows Server Next (the one based on the same core as Windows 10 client). Microsoft made an initial test build of that server code available on October 1 but hasn't released to external testers a server update since then, officials have confirmed. Built-in Docker containerization support is coming to Windows Server next, but Microsoft officials haven't said when testers will see this in test builds.
As has been reported widely, there's a new leaked build of Windows 10 available on file-sharing sites, but Microsoft isn't encouraging testers to download/install it. That build, 9888, wasn't designated by Microsoft as being stable enough for its Windows Insider testers. It supposedly doesn't include much new, feature-wise (mostly some fairly minor adjustments to context menus and animations), plus the change to the Windows 10.0 kernel naming convention.
A quick recap for those trying to keep track of Windows 10 schedules: Microsoft is allowing Windows 10 testers to choose whether to receive Technical Preview updates more quickly or more slowly. Currently, only 10 percent of testers are opting to be on the fast track. (The slow track is the default.) I'm not sure if Microsoft will offer similar choices to testers of the coming Windows 10 mobile SKU, but I'd imagine so.
Windows 10 will include an updated Start layout.

Lollipop isn't making a dent in Android usage numbers (yet)

Now that Android 5.0 Lollipop is finally rolling out to devices around the globe, you might be wondering just how much of an impact it's making on the Android ecosystem. The short answer: not much. Google has released its latest Android usage stats, and Lollipop doesn't even register yet -- in other words, less than 0.1 percent of Google Play users have moved to the new software. That's not surprising given that both the upgrade and Lollipop-native devices like the Nexus 6 are weeks old at best, but it suggests that the new OS will take a while before it makes its presence known.
How about everyone else, then? As you might have guessed, KitKat now reigns supreme. It has the largest share of any Android point release, hitting 33.9 percent (versus 20.9 percent just three months ago). Use of older versions is going down across the board, too, which suggests that many phone and tablet owners are moving to relatively recent code. It's hard to know if KitKat has reached its peak yet, but the slew of expected Lollipop updates hints that it won't be top dog for too much longer.

Apple Pay Competitor 'Android Pay' Is Reportedly Coming To China

It looks as if Apple Pay will soon face some competition in the mobile payments space from its biggest competitor, Android.
According to a new report from China Business News, a new mobile payments service called Android Pay is coming, and it will most likely launch in the third quarter of 2015.
Android Pay is reportedly being developed by China UnionPay, which is the biggest credit- and debit-card provider in China. For context, UnionPay is the second-biggest payment network in the world next to Visa, based on the value of processed transactions.
Because of UnionPay's expansive list of partners, Android Pay could feasibly debut with the support of more partners than Apple Pay, which UnionPay also plans to support next year.
According to Want China Times, UnionPay has already approached smartphone makers including Lenovo and Coolpad. UnionPay is likely to offer subsidies to smartphone makers to ensure popular smartphones will include the technology required for Android Pay to work.
Android Pay will be similar to Apple Pay and will use Near Field Communication payments with Android smartphones, which will allow for wireless payments.
